I love being outside but when it comes to painting outside, I always made excuses not to do it—too windy, too cold, too hot, bugs get in my paint, you name it. So my New Year’s resolution was to end this procrastination and go outside and paint or draw weekly. I wanted to get out of the house and learn from observing nature closely.

It’s only February but so far I’ve really enjoyed getting outside with my small watercolor journal. I’ve mainly been going to places in my Decatur, Georgia neighborhood:

I was at a park on a weekday morning and guys with leaf blowers were everywhere. The geese did not mind. I found geese to be excellent models. (Avondale Park)

A winter pond…

This was a photo I took after sketching. It just doesn’t capture the colors I saw in the pond. (Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve)

…has surprising color.

In life, I saw lots of violets and greens.

Every time I really look at chickens I admire the amazing colors and patterns of their feathers. Unfortunately the chickens did not pose well when I finally remembered to take a photo. (Wylde Garden, Oakhurst)

If all fails, I can find something to paint in my backyard.

What’s next?

Although it has only been six weeks since I set my goal, I’ve been consistent with my weekly sketching. I feel ready to venture further, perhaps with an easel.

Photo: I painted the Chattahoochee River with a friend last year. It’s always motivating and fun to paint with a friend.
