I carry around a sketchbook so I can make quick figure sketches of people in public places. The endless varieties of human expression continually inspire me.
A Tiny Dance . . .

Last year when I lived in Austin, TX, I sometimes participated in David Ohlerking’s painting sessions.
In this one, a modern dance company danced for the painting crowd; then the dancers stopped and would hold a pose for 15 minutes. I talked to this particular dancer during the break and asked her how “sitting still” compared to dancing. She said that even when just sitting still, she was concentrating on her pose and expression; to her it was just a “tiny dance.”
Waiting on a plane

Waiting for a plane myself, I began drawing all the people around me in the Austin airport terminal. I thought these two teenagers would make a great painting—their postures, baggy clothes, even the sweet expression on their sleeping faces.
